Auckland Art Gallery

The Auckland Art Gallery, or Toi o Tamaki, is housed in a Victorian building that has been given a contemporary architectural twist. Under its impressive ceilings of suspended wood, you can enjoy the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in the country. The focus here is on artists from New Zealand, with works by Robert Aitken and Richard Gross. But you will also find European masterpieces here, from the likes of Andreas Gursky and Juan Gris, as well as artists from the Pacific, such as Maggie Napangardi Watson. A collection of Maori art tops off this eclectic selection. Don’t miss the museum’s outdoor café, which is well worth a visit for its contemporary sculptures and views over Albert Park.
