Fort Saint Jean and the Mucem

Recently restored, Fort Saint-Jean is a historical monument dating back to the 12th century, and a great place to indulge in scenic strolls through its gardens, and enjoy stunning views of the Mediterranean coastline. A 130-meter long rooftop walkway links the fort to the Museum of the Civilisations of Europe and the Mediterranean - colloquially known as the MuCEM -, the centrepiece of Marseille’s stint as European Capital Culture in 2013. Discover this unique building dappled by shadows filtered through a lacy screen of dark concrete, designed by French architect Rudy Ricciotti. Explore the rich millennial history of Mediterranean civilisations and culture stretching from Beirut to Gibraltar, by taking part in the museum’s guided tour, interactive activities, programs, and events.
