How to channel French Art de Vivre within the UK: Food and Drink
To experience the best of French food and drink whilst still being on home soil, you should head to London. It has the biggest French community in the UK and the seventh biggest worldwide.
Located on Ledbury Road, Notting Hill, this magnifique restaurant holds two Michelin stars and is headed by Brett Graham. Brett might be Australian, but you would struggle to find a better chef when it comes to French dining. The restaurant has appeared in Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants.
Brett uses French techniques with Japanese and British ingredients, to create dishes with complex flavours. This one of the reasons why dining at The Ledbury is unforgettable. Brett has received several awards, including the Josephine Pignolet Award and Young Chef of the Year Award.
It is extremely hard to get a reservation at The Ledbury, so if you would like to experience Brett’s food for yourself, make sure you book months in advance. The tasting menu is £150 per person and the tasting menu with wines is £260 per person.

To experience a French cheese room, you should visit La Fromagerie on Moxon Street, Marylebone. You’ll feel like you’re in a France, as you sit on a small wooden bench and enjoy a selection of the 100 French cheeses available. There’s also Spanish, Italian, Swiss, Dutch, Portuguese, Austrian, German, Scandinavian, American and Belgium cheeses for sale.
Many of the French cheeses are named after the village or mountain they were made and come presented in different ways. Some cheeses come wrapped in leaves, others coated in herbs. As you taste cheeses you’ve never tried before you’ll educate yourself and be left in no doubt that France produces some of the best cheeses in the world.
Very little English is spoken in the cheese room and deli, so you can fully immerse yourself. As well as the cheese, there’s also a good selection of wine and other produce available in the shop/deli and food is served during opening hours. On Fridays, there is Wine, Cheese and Charcuterie tastings and three or four course meals are served on Friday and Saturday nights.
This authentic bar is tucked between Soho and Covent Garden and describes itself as a piece of French history in London. It has tankards and ties hanging from the ceiling and serves rustic French food. It’s the oldest French wine bar in London and is famous for its incredible cheeses and French wines. You can only dine in the restaurant downstairs if you’re a member, but everyone is welcome in the ground floor bar. It’s THE place to go if you want to enjoy a freshly baked, authentic French baguette.
Their wine list is exclusively French – with nineteen available by the glass and seven by the bottle. The wine menu includes:
