India Gate

Established in the Colaba district since 1914, the India Gate, a 265-metre high yellow basalt reminiscent of the Grand Arc de Triomphe, is undoubtedly the most visited monument in Mumbai/Bombay by foreign visitors. For locals, it is a pleasant place to stroll around thanks to its seafront breeze. The India Gate is a fine example of colonial architecture: it was built to commemorate the visit of the Emperor of India, George V. Paradoxically, it also evokes India’s independence. The final parade of English soldiers underneath its arches in 1947 remains forever engraved in the Indian collective memory.
