The picturesque district of De Negen Straatjes (The Nine Streets), dating back to the 17th century, owes its name to the number of streets it is made up of which are arranged in the shape of a square. Original designer fashion boutiques rub shoulders with vintage treasures here. Gypset Rock, House of Poems and Mensocks are just some of the evocative names of the 200 boutiques that can be found here. You’ll be in heaven if you prefer independent retailers to the big brands. To the west, you can discover the buzzing De Jordaan district. A former working-class neighborhood built to house workers, it is now an arty, bohemian area. Its streets are home to shops selling old-school vinyl and second-hand clothes as well as busy coffee shops, well-preserved “brown cafés”, and a delightful flea market on the square where you can also find the Noorderkerk.
