Parc du Cinquantenaire
It was only in 1880 that Belgium, a young nation, celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. On this occasion, Leopold II, nicknamed the Builder King for good reason, dreamed of a huge complex glorifying the greatness of the country and of his reign. Completed during the International Exposition of 1897, the Parc du Cinquantenaire today comprises a wide avenue leading to a triumphal arch, a park and some large pavilions. The last of these house museums, notably Autoworld which is a reminder that the automobile was one of the jewels of Belgian industry. The Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History displays arms and armor but also a surprising collection of flying machines.
