The Palais Longchamp and the Museum of Natural History

Located just steps away from the Vieux Port (Old Harbour), the Palais Longchamp brings together two of Marseille’s most important museums, as well as a botanical garden. Inaugurated in 1869, and recently refurbished as part of Marseille European Capital of Culture, the palace commemorates the arrival of water from the Durance canal in Marseille. Occupying the right wing of the monument, the Natural History Museum takes you on an immersive journey throughout the natural world, wonderfully illustrated by an impressive collection of 80,000 animal specimens, 20,000 plant specimens, and 8,000 minerals and rocks. Explore Marseille’s rich history from its Gallo-Greek beginnings to the present day. Good to know: entrance is free on the first Sunday of each month!
