The Ruins of Saint-Paul

The carved silhouette of the façade of Mater Dei is one of the iconic symbols of Macau. This beautiful structure can be found at the top of an impressive staircase with 68 steps, and is the only part of the original building that survived the massive fire that took hold in 1835. This religious site dates back to the arrival of the Jesuits in the city in the 14th century. It started out as a simple straw church and grew over the centuries until the priests were expelled from the colonies around 1759. The ruins include those of St Paul’s College, which was once the university for the whole of the Far East.
